New York State Police

Underwater Recovery Team

SCUBA patch The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team is the oldest public safety dive team in the United States. Operating since 1932, the URT consists of nine full time regional team leaders and 56 on-call divers, which are evenly distributed across eight Troops (excluding Long Island, NYC and the NYS Thruway) in Upstate New York. The NYSP URT is the largest law enforcement public safety dive team in the country and regularly provides its specialized services to communities and law enforcement agencies across the state. When not assigned to a dive detail, on-call NYSP divers perform regular patrol and administrative duties.

Today's NYSP URT capabilities far exceed those of the original hard hat, surface supplied air divers of the 1930's. With its arsenal of 22 available boats, including four (4) airboats, and a multitude of high tech underwater electronic search equipment, the NYSP URT is able to respond to boat accidents, accidental drownings, flood emergencies, swift water rescues and a multitude of other water related emergencies.

The NYSP URT responds to an approximate average of 240 calls annually and performs an average of 1,800 dives recovering victims, weapons, evidence, vehicles and aircraft from New York State waters. Yearly joint dive training includes state and local professional public safety dive teams from ten states and Canada.
