Duties & Responsibilities:The Forensic LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) Coordinator Forensic Scientist 4, SG-23, in the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center will be a policy-influencing position that will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the LIMS within the four Forensic Laboratories of the State Police. The position will be responsible for ensuring the congruency between the existing as well as future Laboratory and Information Technology Systems. The incumbent will be required to utilize extensive forensic laboratory knowledge to determine laboratory system needs, and successfully deploy appropriate systems to satisfy those needs.


Assists and provides guidance to laboratory staff to clarify and resolve LIMS business problems.

Responsible for the development of strategies and plans to meet current and future needs of the laboratory systems.

Responsible for the implementation of approved plans to fulfill laboratory needs. This will include, but is not necessarily limited to, the recommendation of policies; researching, procuring and deployment of necessary resources for system implementation; the development of laboratory procedures and training materials in conjunction with sectional coordinators and regional directors; and the training of staff in all laboratories.

Responsible for the monitoring and management of Quality Systems. This will include, but is not necessarily limited to, providing data analysis to ensure congruency; monitoring compliance with established SOP's; and working closely with the New York State Police Quality Assurance Manager to ensure that laboratory accreditation requirements are maintained.

Responsible for providing detailed data reports to management. These reports include case/item statistics and annual report information.

Responsible for the administration of the LIMS System. These duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, the determination and management of user accounts; access level determination, ensuring proper safe archiving and retrieval of LIMS documents; management of LIMS configuration; ensuring security protocols and policies are adhered to; and the implementation and testing of new releases of LIMS software.
Minimum and/or Preferred Qualifications:Possess a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in natural science or physical science or computer science.


Six (6) years' experience performing the duties of a Forensic Scientist or its equivalent in another laboratory.


A Master's Degree in a Natural or Physical Science or Computer Science may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing:

Three (3) years professional experience in an analytical laboratory or criminal justice organization coordinating initiatives or programs with three (3) years' experience in preparation of user requirements and procedures; interaction with end users to resolve business problems; familiarity with relational database techniques related to the operation of criminal justice programs.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

A working knowledge of computers, computer networks and computer database management.

Experience working directly with end users in an information technology support role.

Strong working knowledge of relational database techniques, including Oracle and other relational databases.

Substantial experience with database reporting tools.

Familiarity with relevant technical literature and demonstrated initiative to maintain proficiency in the information technology and/or forensic science fields.

Extensive knowledge in forensic laboratory policies and procedures.
Additional Comments:Starting Salary: $71,847.00
