Duties & Responsibilities: The Forensic Scientist 4 - Technical Coordinator/Safety, SG-23, is assigned to the Quality Assurance section of the New York State Police Crime Laboratory System at the Forensic Investigation Center, Albany, New York. The position will report to the Director of Quality Assurance and, in addition to the below, will assist with the implementation of the proficiency test program and other administrative tasks assigned to the Quality Assurance office.

DUTIES:

Conducts periodic inspections (Bloodborne Pathogens 29CFR1910.1030, Hazard Communication 29CFR1910.1200, Laboratory Standard 29CFR1910.1450, Respiratory Protection 29CFR1910.134, NYS Right-to-Know 12NYCRR Part 820, NYS Sanitary Code/Radiation Part 16) of all Forensic Investigation Center sections and makes timely recommendations to the Director of Quality Assurance - New York State Police Crime Laboratory to ensure the overall safety environment and compliance to Federal/State safety Standards.

Communicates information concerning laboratory employee health and safety issues to the Director of Quality Assurance - New York State Police Crime Laboratory for recommendation and action.

Conducts periodic safety inspections of the satellite crime laboratory facilities to communicate proper safety procedures to satellite employees and reports to the Director of Quality Assurance - New York State Police Crime Laboratory to ensure compliance to Federal/State safety standards of the laboratory system.

Conducts safety orientation and training for all new laboratory employees to coincide with commencement of their employment and keeps accurate records of these orientations and trainings.

Schedules physical examinations for laboratory employees in cooperation with the New York State Employee Health Service and ensures that laboratory employee health files are kept up-to-date, including toxic exposure records and right-to-know information.

Ensure laboratory system is in full compliance with Federal OSHA and State PESH laws and the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board regarding standard operating procedures, employee training and record keeping.

Ensure fume hoods, safety showers and eye washes, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment remain operational.

Assist the Director of Quality Assurance in preparing for and conducting internal audits of the New York State Police Crime Laboratory System.

Maintain the laboratory document control system in Open Lab, including posting new or revised documents and archiving documents no longer in use.

Ensure the proper implementation of the proficiency test and retest programs for New York State Police Crime Laboratory System, including the maintenance of required records.

Assist the Director of Quality Assurance in completing reports and surveys required to maintain ASCLD/LAB and New York State accreditation.

Assist the Director of Quality Assurance in the review of nonconforming work events and corrective actions for appropriateness and completeness.

Perform other tasks and duties as requested by the Director of Quality Assurance - New York State Police Crime Laboratory System.
Minimum and/or Preferred Qualifications: - A Bachelor's degree in the Natural or Physical Sciences.

- Currently hold a position as a Forensic Scientist 3 for five (5) years or have comparable experience.

Experience in the following National and State safety standards:

Bloodborne Pathogens - 29CFR1910.1030,

Hazard Communications - 29CFR1910.1200,

Laboratory Standard - 29CFR1910.1450,

Respiratory Standard - 29CFR1910.134,

NYS Right to Know - 12NYCRR Part 820,

NYS Sanitary Code/Radiation - Part 16

Preference will be given to candidates who:

Have attended formal training provided by external organizations, such as Public Employees Federation, State Department of Labor or Federal OSHA, in occupational health and safety topics.

Additional Comments: Starting Salary: $67,703.00

This position does not require that the candidate have taken and passed a NYS Civil Service examination, or currently hold a qualifying position withing the NYS Civil Service System.
