POL Article 6 § 87 : Freedom of Information Law Requests
Subject Matter List Pursuant to POL § 87 (FOIL)
The following list describes the records maintained by the New York State Police and is current as of September 1, 2012. This list does not imply that all records are available to the public. All government records are subject to the exemptions stipulated in the Freedom of Information Law. Administrative Records
- Management memoranda and correspondence reflecting actions taken in regard to planning, supervising, controlling and coordinating operations of the State Police.
Applicant Investigation Records
- Background investigations of persons considered for appointment to positions of trust within state government which are conducted at the request of other agencies and background investigations of those applicants for employment within this Division.
Communications Records
- Copies of message traffic sent through the statewide communications network and operations manuals for users of such system. Associated records include maintenance logs and schedules, related information concerning property and equipment owned and leased; also includes information concerning persons wanted or missing and property which has been reported lost or stolen.
Criminal Information Records
- Records contain pertinent information relating to crimes investigated, or being investigated, reflecting the identities of those persons who have committed, are committing or are planning the commission of crimes.
Fiscal Management Information
- Records containing budget data and submissions with certificates of approval, payroll information, purchasing records and vouchers for payment of services and supplies.
Laboratory Records
- Laboratory reports and records of specific analysis of physical evidence, together with pertinent background information relating to the evidence submitted.
Personnel Records
- Records pertaining to present and former employees including entrance and promotional examinations and classification of individual positions.
Pistol Permit Records
- Records contain duplicate pistol license applications and amendments thereto for all licenses issued after April 8, 1936; reports of firearms dealers and gunsmiths indicating receipt, delivery and repair of firearms, and those records concerning weapons as mandated by Article 400, Penal Law.
Training Records
- Copies of orders, schedules and the academic records of all persons attending the State Police, as well as those records of other personnel attending other schools; pertinent information concerning courses taught together with data relating to the daily administration of the facility.
