Governor Addresses 88 New State Troopers

The 197th Session Graduates from the State Police Basic School

Albany, NY (June 9, 2009) - Governor David A. Paterson and New York State Police Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt today honored 88 new troopers at ceremonies marking the completion of the 197th Session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. The new troopers will report for field duty on June 23, 2009, and for the following ten weeks will be evaluated under a field-training program supervised by senior Field Training Officers.

"Today’s graduates have answered a noble calling. You are the very best among us, and I am intensely proud to be in your presence today," said Governor Paterson. "New York is one of the safest states in the country, owing in no small part to the fine work of the New York State Police and this graduating class will continue that tradition of high quality and professional police service. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my sincere gratitude for your service."

“I welcome these 88 men and women to our ranks,” said Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt. “Protecting our communities has become increasingly more challenging and complex. Thanks to the continued support of Governor Paterson, we are able to maintain the highest quality of law enforcement services. The training these Troopers have received has prepared them to rise above these challenges.”

In additional to honoring all graduates from the 197th Session of Basic School, Superintendent Corbitt presented the following awards:

  • Trooper Foundation Award, for being honored and elected by his fellow graduates to speak as the class representative, to Trooper Scott J. Freeman, of Lowville, NY;
