Academy: Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What subjects are covered during basic school training?

A - To view the curriculum, click on Basic School on the menu at left.

Q -Does the State Police Academy give tours?

A - There are no regularly scheduled tours of the Academy, but tours can be arranged for individuals or groups of up to 25 people by contacting the First Sergeant's office at (518) 457-8112.

When you arrive at the Academy, you will be greeted by the trooper(s) who will guide you and answer questions.

  1. Your tour begins with a 20-minute video explaining our rich State Police history and shows you the type of training that a recruit trooper receives.

  2. You and your group will be given a tour of the facility to view firsthand the recruit trooper's military-style training, studying and living environment.

  3. You will visit the in-house physical training facilities and see examples of defensive tactics training and physical conditioning in progress.

  4. The indoor firearms range is another stop. Here you may see our marksmanship training, where recruits learn the fundamentals of marksmanship and firearms safety.

  5. The tour concludes with a visit to the Academy museum and our "Wall of Honor" commemorating those who gave their lives in the service to the residents of the State of New York.

  6. We can arrange for you to have lunch in the Academy cafeteria, if you wish.

Note: We are unable to give a tour without prior arrangement.
